Hiking Mt. Monogatari
Mt. Monogatari is a mountain steeped in legends of hidden treasure. Despite its picturesque name, the trail features steep climbs and rough terrain, making it a rewarding hike for those looking for a challenge.
The trailhead is located near National Route 254, making Mt. Monogatari one of the mountains in the Nishi-Joshu area that can be reached by public transportation.
From Shimonita Station, take the Shimonita Town Bus Ichinokaya Line toward Saku. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Nishimaki River and the mountains of Nishi-Joshu, including Mt. Ozawa, sometimes called the “Matterhorn of Nishi-Joshu,” and Mt. Inafukumi.
Get off at the Sun Sports Land bus stop and follow the forest road toward the trailhead. Continue along the stream until you reach a sign marking the entrance to the Mt. Monogatari trail.
Menbei Rock on Mt. Monogatari is associated with a local legend that treasure was hidden here during Japan’s Warring States period.
Beyond the trailhead, the path becomes narrow and steep. Take extra care after rain, as the trail can become slippery. At the saddle, take the trail to the left toward the west peak, then continue on to the summit.
Return by the same route.
